A linguistic approach to an Andalusi proverb collection O Al-Massq, 6 (1993): 41-55 Articles A LINGUISTIC APPROACH TO A N ANDALUSI PROVERB COLLECTION Marina Marugán Universidad de Madrid The Andalusi dialect bundle, which belongs to the western Arabic dialects, comprises a great variety of subdialects according to the geographical area such as Toledo, Valencia, Granada, and the chronology of the text ie. from the fourth/ tenth to the eleventh/seventeenth century, as well as on the register of the different documents such as the muwashshahat, azjāl, legal contracts, proverbs, etc. During the last twenty years, the synchronie and diachronic study of all this documentation ha s been the main subject of research of a few specialists; among them we should mention, in particular, the name of Federico Corriente1 and his project for the new edition, from a linguistic point of view, of the foremost sources of the Andalusi dialect; under his guidance and within the framework of that project, we have accomplished the philological study of one of these sources: the proverb collection of Ibn cĀsim al-Gharnatl (d. 830/1426). 2 The fifth chapter of Ibn cĀsim's book hladä'iq al-Azāhir^Amthāl al^Āmma wa Hikamuha, consists of 853 popular proverbs written in the vernacular of Granada and classified according to the http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Al-Masaq: Journal of the Medieval Mediterranean Taylor & Francis
