Abstract

Ample Opportunity provides social support for body acceptance. The organization sponsors physical activities, workshops, and information-sharing which promote physical and mental health for fat women. Ample Opportunity acknowledges the social stigma associated with fatness in this culture and creates positive action toward social change. The philosophy, practices, and organizational model are described. There is opportunity for coalition building among fat women, health and mental health professionals, and organizations like Ample Opportunity which support a positive lifestyle not dependent on weight reduction. The philosophy and principles of Ample Opportunity are relevant to psychotherapy, and specific applications useful to therapists are developed.
