An Anthropological Perspective on Some Cultural Aspects of Cardiac Rehabilitation Viewpoint • An Anthropological Perspective on Some Cultural Aspects of Cardiac Rehabilitation Dr. Free was appointed House Anthropologist at Baylor Uni­ Mary Moore Free, Ph.D. versity Medical Center at the beginning of this year. She holds a House Anthropologist Ph.D. degree with a double concentration in physical and medical anthropology. Her training and experience in cultural issues of health care relating to ethnicity or aging should enhance communi­ cation between relevant patient groups and health care providers. Dr. Free's relationship with BUMe's Coronary Rehabilitation Program began on a personal note. After her husband suffered a myocardial infarction in 1989. Dr. Free accompanied him to his coronary artery disease rehabilitation classes at the Hunt Heart Center. Beginning with the traditional anthropological method of participant observation. she collected data during these sessions. This article reflects the results of her research. -Ed. This anthropological viewpoint is the result of fieldwork conducted throughout one cycle of a class in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, part of the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease available in the Hunt Heart Center at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC).
