The Tavistock Clinic has for the past two years been engaged on systematic researoh into the Effects on young Children of Temporary Separation from their Mothers, and during this ,~rk has studied a number of children, during and after their stay in hospital. This is a soientifio study which seeks to test the hypothesis that lack of mothering (fo r any reason) in t he early years may impair the capaoi ty to make good rela. tionships in later life, to discover the influence of variable such as age of child, and length and conditions of separation, and to add to knowledge of personality development by eluoidating the mental prooesses of young children who undergo this experienoe. The research team has had the help of an Advisory Committee, many of whose members are acti vely concerned with the problans of children in hospital, and invites information and comnent. 18.
