Ancient Woods, Trees and Forests. Ecology, History and Management

Ancient Woods, Trees and Forests. Ecology, History and Management LANDSCAPES BOOK REVIEW Ancient Woods, Trees and Forests. Ecology, History and Management, edited by Alper H. Çolak, Simay Kirca and Ian D. Rotherham, Pelagic Publishing: London, xix + 468 pp., £49.99 (hbk), ISBN: 978-1-78427-264-7 This remarkable and thought-provoking book demonstrates the vitality and strength of current trees, woods and forests research. It has 22 chapters which identify and consider diverse approaches to the study of trees: most of the research is European, although three refer to some fascinating Turkish studies. The authors, many of whom have had many years’ experience of woodland research, are all acknowledged experts. Some of the chapters report on recent, original research while others provide broad critical overviews. All the chap- ters are valuable and together they produce a kaleidoscopic overview of recent research developments. The opening chapter by George Peterken, who with Oliver Rackham invented the term ‘ancient woodland’ in its modern, British sense, provides an excellent introduction to the development of the idea of ancient woodland and its policy context. Further key chapters by Ian Rotherham, Oliver Rackham, Della Hooke and Keith Kirby provide valuable assess- ments of the cultural heritage of woods and forests, the archaeology of trees, woodland and wood-pasture, trees http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Landscapes Taylor & Francis
