Are you Creating a Blue Ocean?

Are you Creating a Blue Ocean? asia pcaific journal of social work and development Volume 19 • Number 2 • December 2009 Commentary WAN KWONG WENG introduction What do prancing acrobats, the Big Bertha golf driver, and a QB House for haircut have in common? In their international bestseller Blue Ocean Strategy, Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne expounded on the need to create a value innovation model for businesses. Instead of struggling in a bloody “red ocean” with rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool or struggling for differentiation, the aim should be to unleash new demand, create new frontiers—a “Blue Ocean” of uncontested marketplace. Chan and Renee discussed, among other topics, the transformation by Guy Laliberte of the circus industry through Cirque du Soleil. No star performers, three rings, and pushing aisle concession sales. Instead, while the tents, clowns, and acrobatic acts remain, each Cirque du Soleil creation has a theme, a storyline and an original score, resembling a theatre performance, as well as more sophisticated style of humor. What about the charity or social services sector? Should the direction or activities of our volunteer welfare organizations be always plagued by perennial “red ocean” issues of declining donations and generating more interests from volunteers? http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asia Pacific Journal of Social Work and Development Taylor & Francis
