Artificial Intelligence, Web 3, and the Future of Distance Education AMERICAN JOURNAL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION 2023, VOL. 37, NO. 2, 83–84 https://doi.org/10.1080/08923647.2023.2206081 EDITORIAL Artificial Intelligence, Web 3, and the Future of Distance Education I recently attended a conference that addressed topics related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Web 3.0 and was reminded of research and work that I conducted over twenty years ago in the so-called Web 2 and virtual world/metaverse space. The enthusiasm at this recent conference reminded me of the early 2000s and the beginning of the dot com era – and of the fact that by 2008 there were more than 250 colleges, universities, and educational consor- tiums – as well as many corporations and other organizations that had created a presence in one of the most popular virtual worlds, Second Life. Thousands of teachers, administrators, librarians, and students participated in both formal and informal educational events. This was the virtual world where I built the first version of The International Museum of Distance Education and Technology (now being redesigned as a website), and where our journal’s editor, Dr. Michael G.
