Awakening: Four Lives in Art, by Eileen Chanin and Steven Miller

Awakening: Four Lives in Art, by Eileen Chanin and Steven Miller Australian and New Zealand Journal of Art, 2015 Vol.15,No.2,240243, http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14434318.2015.1089822 REVIEW Awakening: Four Lives in Art by Eileen Chanin and Steven Miller, Mile End, South Australia, Wakefield Press, 2015, 256 pp., 32 pp. colour, $39.95 (paper- back), ISBN 9781743053652 ? Awakening: Four Lives in Art sees Sydney-based art historian Eileen Chanin and Art Gallery of New South Wales archivist Steven Miller reunited 10 years after the publication of their highly regarded Degenerates and Perverts (2005), which took Sir Keith Murdoch’s groundbreaking 1939 Herald Exhibition of French and British Contemporary Art as a starting point for a wide-ranging investigation of modernism in Australia in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Awakening is a kind of internationalist and feminist coda to the previous book. It showcases four expatriate Australian women who were instrumental in producing and promoting the musical and visual arts at home and abroad between the wars. Chanin and Miller dub them the ‘artist’, the ‘patron’, the ‘publicist’ and the ‘educator’. The ‘artist’, Ballarat-born Dora Ohlfsen (18671948), settled in Italy in 1902 at the age of 34, after three years in Germany studying piano and six years in Russia. During this formative decade, Ohlfsen abandoned a career in music, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian and New Zealand Journal of Art Taylor & Francis
