The volume is the product of the closing conference of a research group that worked from September 2009 to August 2010 on Personal and Institutional Reli- gion: Christian Thought and Practice from the Fifth to the Eighth Centuries at the Insti- tute for Advanced Studies/Hebrew University Jerusalem. Chronologically, the essays focus on the time period from the sixth to the eighth century, with some exceptions such as in the essay by Brouria Bitton-Ashkelony, which spans the fourth to the eleventh century.
