Summary R. Coutin & K. M. Harris: Biology of Contarinia sorghi (Harris) Comb, nov., living in millet in Senegal (Dipt. Cecidomyiidae). During 1967 Coutin found a species of Stenodiplosis Reuter (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) living in the male flowers of bulrush millet (Pennisetum typhoides) in southern Senegal. Harris has identified the species as Contarinia (= Stenodiplosis) sorghi (Harris, 1964), a species that was originally described from Sorghum in Nigeria and Uganda. This paper gives details of the distribution and biology of this species with special reference to its numerical abundance in millet heads, its daily activity cycle, ovipositional behaviour, seasonal biology and parasites. C. sorghi appears to be of no economic importance as larvae live almost exclusively within the male flowers of millet and do not affect grain formation.
