Summary P. du Merle: Biology of two species of the genus Usia Latreille [Dipt. Bombyliidae] This paper describes the life-history of two species of bee-flies, Usia atrata Fabr. and Usia sp. ? aenea Rossi. These bee-flies are monovoltine. Adults spend the greater part of their life on various flowers. Their mating and egg-laying behaviours are much less complicated than those known in other Bombyliid genera. The egg-laying female alights on the low herbaceous vegetation and releases some eggs that fall by themselves on the ground. The eggs, unprovided with earth coating, are scattered independently of the host presence. Larvae are ectoparasite. The natural host of U. atrata is the pupa of the Tenebrionid beetle Asida sabulosa Fuessl., that of U. sp. is still unknown. Rearing of both species is possible on the pupae of the ant Formica rufibarbis Fabr., though they do not parasitize Formicidae in the field. The mature larva shows an obligatory estivo-hibernal diapause that sometimes continues for an additional year.
