Biologie et Dynamique d'Un Peuplement Acridien de Zone Soudanienne en Afrique de l'Ouest (Orthoptera, Acrididae)

Biologie et Dynamique d'Un Peuplement Acridien de Zone Soudanienne en Afrique de... Summary This study describes the biological characteristics of a grasshopper settlement in the sudanian area of the Upper-Volta. The population cycle is reconstructed with great accuracy, the most important species being studied over a period of two years in their natural habitat. The adaptation to the severe climatic conditions of the sudanian area is shown by the differing biological cycles which are described in detail. According to their means of survival during the dry season, locusts and grasshoppers can be divided into three categories: species with embryonic diapause, species with imaginai diapause and species with continuous breeding. The number of annual reproductions varies between 1 and 4 according to the species, univoltin species being the most numerous. Biological cycles are correlated to the duration of the rainy season. Some species are able to adapt their biological cycle to the ecological conditions. They breed continuously throughout the year and have a resistance form (in the imaginal or embryonic state) in areas with a long dry season. The long distance flying capabilities of grasshoppers are demonstrated, both during the rainy and dry seasons, for many species previously thought to be sedentary ones. These displacements are relative to major climatic events and, in particular, to the seasonal movements of the intertropical convergence zone and to associated wind and rain systems. In the area studied, the impact of these displacements on the population cycle is considerable. The density of the acridian settlement is shown to depend equally on local multiplication along with the migration of the adults. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Annales de la Société entomologique de France (N S ) Taylor & Francis
