Summary Developments in the study of the scent glands in Hemiptera-Heteroptera have been surveyed. Monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids are among recent additions to the list of known secretory products. Promotion of precopulatory aggregations is an addition to the list of functions attributed to the secretions. However, the traditional view according to which the basic function of the scent glands is defense against predation remains unchallenged by recent findings. In studies on the metathoracic scent gland three types of biochemical maturation have been encountered. A role for the accessory gland in the biosynthesis of the scent aldehydes as a source of extracellular enzymes has been suggested. In the absence of an accessory gland, esters instead of aldehydes accumulate as final products in the median scent reservoir. Reported functions of external cuticular patterns include control of degree and direction of spread in the ejected secretion. It has been found that parasitoids are able to make use of scent volatiles as host location cues.
