Book review Al-Masaq, Vol. 21, No. 1, April 2009 Book Reviews The Islamic World: Past and Present JOHN ESPOSITO (Ed.), 2004 Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press 3 vols., xxiv þ 720 pp., ill., maps $325.00 (Hardcover) ISBN 0195175948 The Islamic World: Past and Present is the latest in a number of encyclopedias and reference works edited by John Esposito on Islam and the Muslim world. These reference works, in addition to his other anthologies and textbooks, are typically erudite and accessible to undergraduate students, making them precious tools in both introductory and advanced courses on Islam and the Middle East. Though in the same line, The Islamic World is rather unique because, according to the editor, its target readership is ‘‘young adults’’, that is middle to high school students. This group of readers has been entirely ignored by scholars in the field who were either contributing more specialized studies or producing much needed general survey works and introductions to Islam and the Middle East. No doubt the need for a larger selection of monographs on Islam and the Muslim world targeting college students and the general lay readership is colossal, but it is equally important to widen the circle http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Al-Masaq: Journal of the Medieval Mediterranean Taylor & Francis
