Smith, Paul Flowers, and Michael Larkin (2009) is a welcome addition Ito the field of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) or what others have termed hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry (see van Manen, 1997). As a novice researcher who spent many hours struggling to grasp the complex philosophical underpinnings of hermeneutic phenomenological thought in an attempt to apply these philosophical ideas to qualitative research, this book is certainly a breath of fresh air. In contrast to the abstract theoretical and philosophical works of Husserl and Heidegger, this introductory text is written in a clear, engaging, and accessible manner. In Chapter One the authors outline IPA as a distinct approach to qualitative research inquiry, which combines key ideas from phenomenology, hermeneutics, and ideography to help qualitative researchers examine “how people make sense of their major life experiences” (Smith et al., 2009, p. 1).
