Oxford: Hart Publishing, 2006. 432 pp. ISBN-13: 978-1-84113-615-8 (hbk.). US$85.00. Precarious Work, Women, and the New Economy: The Challenge to Legal Norms is an informative and thought-provoking collection of papers presented at a workshop held at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in summer 2004. The book is divided into six sections. Section I is the introduction, followed by Section II on supranational norms and discourses about precarious work. Section III is on the working time and precarious work and Section IV is on protecting precarious workers. Section V highlights the lack of fit between the old employment norms and new employment relationships. The conclusion section, Section VI, discusses the challenge of flexibility. In this book the new economy is defined as the economy affected by globalization, the shift from manufacturing to the services sector as a source of employment, and the spread of information- based systems and technologies. The flexibility in the labor market and in employment relations is a result of the new economy.
