Brill xx þ 381 pp., maps E 139.00, US$ 174.00 ISBN 90 04 12541 8 This volume of collected essays on Norman Sicily and South Italy represents an important contribution to a field that has seen remarkable growth recently. It adds to a small but significant wave of new publications in English that have appeared in the last few years, including monographs by both its editors, Graham Loud, The Age of Robert Guiscard: Southern Italy and the Norman Conquest (2000) and Alex Metcalfe, Muslims and Christians in Norman Sicily: Arabic Speakers and the End of Islam (2003), together with Hubert Houben’s Roger II of Sicily, A Ruler between East and West (German, 1997; English translation 2002) and Jeremy Johns’ Arabic Administration in Norman Sicily: The Royal Dıˆwaˆn (2002). This is not an exhaustive list, since it merely notes books that the reviewer happens to have to hand, but it is sufficient to indicate the recent interest in Norman Sicily and southern Italy.
