Book Reviews l a n d s c a p e s (2012), 1, pp. 75–86 © Book Reviews 2013 Robert Van de Noort, North Sea Archaeologies: A Maritime Biography, 10,000 BC to AD 1500 (2011) Oxford University Press, xiv + 282 pages, 46 figures. ISBN 9780199566204, £66 hb, (2012), ISBN 9780199657087, £22.50 pb. The North Sea? In Landscapes? Some might wonder why, but this is certainly a book about ‘landscape’, which of course does not stop at the edge of the land. It is an attempt to use currently fashionable and emerging concepts of landscape to study human interaction with the sea as with the land. Call it a book about seascapes if you like, but it is more than that. Some of its ideas, hard-won as is everything from the sea, deserve to be carried ashore, where much about landscape can be hidden from view by the obvious and the easily seen. The author – or perhaps the publisher – may seem unsure whether the book is about landscape or not, as the word is absent in the index (although ‘heaven and hell’ win four page-references) and we see ‘Archaeologies’ and ‘Biography’ in its title and subtitle. ‘Landscape’ however http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Landscapes Taylor & Francis
