Book reviews Al-Masa ¯ q, Vol. 16, No. 2, September 2004 The Cult of the Saints in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Essays on the Contribution of Peter Brown JAMES HOWARD-JOHNSTON and PAUL ANTHONY HAYWARD (Eds), 1999 Oxford: Oxford University Press x 298 pp. US $112.50 (Cloth) ISBN 0198269781 When Peter Brown published his seminal article on “The Rise of the Holy Man” in 1971, he could scarcely have imagined the impact of the piece, not only on his own intellectual and scholarly career, but on the field of ancient studies as a whole. Inspired by the insights of social anthropology, Brown, and an entire generation of scholars found themselves looking anew at individuals to whom holiness was ascribed in late antiquity, and the texts that described them. What they found was a wealth of information that allowed broad insights into the intersection of social and religious practices in the Mediterranean world. The result was a “Brownian” vision of the Mediterranean world, a world that gave status and authority to the figure of the holy man. This volume is a truly excellent collection of essays and an intimate homage to Brown’s influence as teacher, and as scholar.
