But this is one for which room must be made, because of the breadth of its view, the range of new approaches it encapsulates and the large body of researchers whose voices and ideas it offers. National narratives, disciplinary positions and personal agendas all contribute to a rich tapestry of landscape diversity. Drawing on sessions at the 23rd Meeting of the PESCRL (the Permanent European Standing Conference for the Study of Rural Landscapes) held in Portugal in 2008, the three eminent editors of this book provide in 30 chapters the thoughts and exemplars of 52 other landscape researchers from about two dozen different countries. The chapters are divided equally between four sections: ‘...
