Early in 1995 several archaeological magazines and the national press reported excavations at the Uffington White Horse, Oxfordshire, showing it was cut during the later Bronze Age, around 800 . Now, nearly ten years later, we have the detailed reports that underpin the initial headlines. Using excavations, surveys, scientific studies, documents, pictures, and oral testimony the authors unpicked a familiar block of chalk downland astride the Berkshire Ridge- way over several seasons between 1989 and 1994. In this volume they describe the many strands of evidence collected before weaving them together as an excellent new landscape history. Using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), quartz crystals within silts taken from the outline of the horse were found to have been last exposed to sunlight sometime between 1740 and 210 . Clearly the horse is ancient, but statistically any year within the range is possible
