Ethnic and Theological Tensions in Medieval al-Andalus GORAN LARSSON, 2003 [The Medieval and Early Modern Iberian World, 16] Leiden: E.J. Brill xþ 244 pp., maps. E75/US$ 94.00 ISBN 9004127402 The risalah (letter) written by Ibn Garcı ´a al-Bashkunsi, katib (secretary) of ‘Ali b. Mujahid, lord of Denia (436–468/1044–1076), has attracted the attention of eminent scholars, among them Ignaz Goldziher, for its harsh shu‘ubi contents, quite unusual in the extant Andalusi literature of the time. The actual circumstances of the risala’s composition remain obscure. The epistle may have been directed against Ibn al-Haddad al-Qaysi, a poet and katib of al-Mu‘tasim b. Sumadih of Almeria, _ _ _ _ presumably the author of a text boasting about his own and his master’s Arab origin, while denigrating ‘Ali b. Mujahid’s non-Arab descent. Alternatively, its polemical target may have been Ibn al-Jazzar (or al-Kharraz), himself a katib of al-Mu‘tasim, who refused to join Ibn Garcı ´a in praising ‘Ali b. Mujahid.
