Bullins and Me: A Remembrance of Past Times

Bullins and Me: A Remembrance of Past Times THE JOURNAL OF ARTS MANAGEMENT, LAW, AND SOCIETY, 42: 90–95, 2012 Copyright Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1063-2921 print / 1930-7799 online DOI: 10.1080/10632921.2012.679857 COMMENTARY Robert Macbeth The New Lafayette Theatre of Harlem, New York, New York I have been asked to provide some historical background to these proceedings by sharing a few reflections of my early association with Ed Bullins, whom I have known for almost thirty years as a playwright, collaborator, and friend, and with whom I shared what I consider to be the highlight of my younger creative years—the New Lafayette Theatre. Since I am relatively unknown, I will begin by giving my personal and professional background an introduction. Ed Bullins is the central theme, but, as they say, “much can be learned about a man by knowing the quality of the company that he keeps.” In the late 1950s, after several well-received performances in campus drama group productions, I left the City College of New York and a major in literature and philosophy to pursue an involvement in the professional theater. I say “involvement” because my reasons for leaving school had less to do with a career decision than with what could be called http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png "The Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society" Taylor & Francis
