I also sat on the Students’ Council, as well as the Women’s Department committee. For a few years, the Student Union was a dominant part of my life, and to this day, many of my closest friends come from that period. This is to say: I think we have to start any encounter with the Student Union by understanding its force in the lives of those who are involved in its activities. I picked up my copy of James Waghorne’s new book, By Students for Students: A History of the Melbourne University Union, with great excitement. I wanted to read more of the Student Union’s stories, get to know more of its characters. I wanted to love this book. I was surprised to see on the back cover an endorsement from the University of Melbourne’s Vice-Chancel- lor.
