Based on extensive archival research, this book represents a major contribution to Ottoman social history. The originality of Nacar’s study lies in his effort to place labour activism in tobacco industry in the broader context of the Ottoman economic and political transformation. The book is divided into five main chapters in addition to an introduction highlighting the historiographical contribution of the book and a conclusion providing a brief overview of the lives of the tobacco workers after the dissolution of the empire. In the first chapter, Nacar analyzes the rise of the tobacco industry in the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of a new labour profile as an outcome of this process.
