Casework with children

Casework with children There is an important difference between the problems of young children and those of older children and adults in that the child's behaviour is his part- icular type of response to an existing situation. The behaviour of the adolescent and adult may represent to some extent at least, a reactivation of responses formed in childhood to similar situations, e.g. his reaction to his employer or anyone in authority may be very much influenced by his early relationship with his parents who represented authority to him. These feelings may also enter into this relationship with the social worker. We would remind ourselves again that casework is a process of helping individuals to overcome their social and personal difficulties, and to develop both the capacity and the opportunities to lead healthy, useful and satisfying lives. Children with emotional diffi- culties need satisfying and constructive opportunities for new experiences in the family and in society and the socialworker's aim will be to try to make these available to him, continually bearing in mind that the child "acts the way he does because he feels the way he does". The social worker's contribution will be based on a study of the situation which http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian Journal of Social Work Taylor & Francis
