Abstract
Abstract The 1996 exhibition catalogue of the album Zhi Yuan Tu (Paintings of Zhi Garden), completed in 1627 by the Suzhou professional painter Zhang Hong (1577-after 1652), contains two thought-provoking essays. James Cahill, who has written extensively on Zhang Hong, elaborates on the artist's unmatched vision of a late Ming garden and demonstrates virtually beyond question that Zhang Hong's album on the Zhi Gardens was inspired and encouraged in part by his familiarity with Jesuit sources from the late Ming.
