These years witnessed the continued rise of the Mamluk dynasty, the Mongols’ second major invasion into Syria culminating in their defeat at the battle of Homs (1281), and the final demise of the Crusader States (1291). The tumultuous events of this era are described by authors from many different societies, but an especially rich cluster of texts was produced in the Mamluk Empire. So far, sections from several sources dealing with early Mamluk history have been translated into English, including parts of Ibn al-Furat’s history and Ibn Abd al-Zahir’s chronicle, but these translations have tended to focus on the years up to the death of Sultan Baybars in 1277.
