On the one hand, approaching kala ¯ m has become more analytical, with close attention given to detail; above all, the internal criticism of texts as well as the systematic exploration of specific theological issues has generated conclusive new material. On the other hand, new discoveries have given the discipline of kala ¯ m its autonomous status as a science that now stands apart from philosophy and the study of Greek antiquity. Further, the intellectual originality of Muslim theologians has increasingly been acknowledged. This transformation has been made possible through the work of various scholars, in particular Richard M. Frank, Josef van Ess, Daniel Gimaret and Wilfred Madelung. The systematic publication of major Mu 6tazili,Ma ¯ turidi and Ash 6ari texts, together with more accurate historical contextualisation, has also helped to develop the scholarship http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Al-Masaq: Journal of the Medieval Mediterranean Taylor & Francis
