Summary A critical review of the nine species of North-african Hoplia Illiger is proposed. Two keys are provided to identify both males and females, as well as subspecies and natio. Hoplia africana Esc. is divided into 5 subspecies (two are new) in order to specify its wide distribution; a map offers a global view of the distribution of each subspecies. Lectotypes are selected as often as necessary.
