Columbanus and the Peoples of Post-Roman Europe BOOK REVIEWS 369 The second major part of Writing History in the Medieval Islamic World (appendices B and C) consists of sections from Ibn al-Furāt’s Taʾrīkh al-duwal wa-l-mulūk that have not pre- viously been published. They are offered here both in a critical edition and also in an English translation. These texts serve both to explicate Bora’s foregoing argument (given that they showcase how Ibn al-Furāt compiled his history from earlier sources), but they also make available a substantial corpus of texts that contain many fascinating insights, par- ticularly into the late-Fātimid era. Researchers interested in the wars of the 1160s, which pitted Zangid (later Ayyūbid), Frankish and Fāt imid factions against one another in a complex struggle over the Nile Delta will find much to interest them here with detailed descriptions of events, often not to be found in other sources. Accounts of events such as the battle of al-Balbein (1167) and Shirkuh’s accession to power in Cairo (1168) are especially comprehensive. There are also many interesting and thought-provoking points of detail offered here.
