SUMMARY L. Tsacas, Ch. Bocquet, M. Daguzan & A. Mercier: Comparison of the male genitals of Drosophila melanogaster, Drosophila simulans and their hybrids [Dipt. Drosophilidae] Hybrids between D. melanogaster Meig. and D. simulans Sturt. have been only scantily studied so far. Their genitals are described in detail in this work and are compared to those of the parental species. A structure attached to the hypandrium was discovered and called « phallus sheath ». It consists of a slightly hardened band which winds round the phallus on the back and is attached to the hypandrium through two « stems of the phallus sheath ». This formation was hitherto mistaken for the « penis coat » (which does not correspond to any defined structure) and the dorsal (posterior) paramers. The last have now been studied in detail; the different parts which form them were identified and their relationship to neighbouring structures was shown. On account of a certain confusion which prevails in the nomenclature of the different parts of Drosophila genitals a system is proposed based on that of van Emden and Hennig but adapted for the Drosophilidae. Comparison of the genitals of D. melanogaster, D. simulans and their hybrids has shown that in a total of 22 traits studied, 9 (41%) resemble those of D. simulans, 9 (41%) those of D. melanogaster and only 4 (18%) can really be termed as intermediate. In its general aspect the genital apparatus of the male hybrid seems more similar to that of D. melanogaster than to the simulans as regards both size and the shape of its parts. The features of the simulans parent appear mostly on traits less striking, such as distribution of bristles or spinules. It appears therefore that in the male hybrids simulans-melanogaster the genitals are a mosaic-like structure.
