Conquérir et gouverner la Sicile islamique aux XIe et XIIe siècles 330 Book Reviews ANNLIESE NEF, 2011 Rome: École française de Rome xiii + 829pp. €120.00 (hardback) ISBN 9782728308897 Annliese Nef’s study of the Norman government of Sicily is a monumental achieve- ment. Based primarily on the author’s doctoral thesis and her other published works, it is over 800 pages in length, and its main aim is to demonstrate the methods by which the Normans slowly took over, and then carried out, the governance of the island between their invasion of the then Muslim territory in 1060 and the end of the reign of William II in 1189. Nef’s work builds on that of the titan of scholarship on medieval Sicily from the nineteenth century, Michele Amari, and proves a useful additional resource to the work of other scholars such as Jeremy Johns and Alex Metcalfe. It follows recent scholarship by including sources in Latin, Arabic and Greek, the main languages used in Norman Sicily. The book is divided into four parts, each of which is sub-divided into several chapters. Part one is based on an examination of the Arabic language as it was utilised by the ruling Normans. Chapters here include the employment of Arabic by the Normans, including http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Al-Masaq: Journal of the Medieval Mediterranean Taylor & Francis
