Continuity, Integration and Diversity: Sustainable Urban Design Concepts for Redeveloping

Continuity, Integration and Diversity: Sustainable Urban Design Concepts for Redeveloping Abstract The paper presented in four sections, proposes the application of the urban design concepts of continuity, integration and diversity as strategic tools for urban redevelopment, using Dongjiadu, a historic district in the City of Shanghai as a case for study. Section one argues for the adoption of a sustainable approach in urban redevelopment. The approach emphasizes equal considerations to social, cultural, historic and environmental processes alongside economic factors. Section two gives a brief account of the history of urban planning in Shanghai with an analysis of problems in current redevelopment trends. Section three introduces the alternate urban design proposal of Dongjiadu with illustrations, highlighting the design of an efficient physical framework/system that allows simultaneous preservation of existing values while supporting future growth. Section four concludes with the call for a holistic approach in urban redevelopment. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asian Geographer Taylor & Francis
