Summary The diagnosis of Xenopsylla ramesis and X. cunicularis in their area of common distribution (Morocco) sets problems, for the criterions proposed by Smit (1957) only have a statistical value, and there are overlaps between both species. The position of the apical margin of P(3) (processus telomeris centralis) in comparison with the most anterior ventral bristle of P(1) (processus basimeris dorsalis), is, in the males, the best character of identification. The comparative morphological study of X. cunicularis coming from the various stations covering the whole of its area of distribution leads us to think that this species became differ-renciated in the South of Spain from the X. ramesis parasitic on Gerbills. The European origin of its host, Oryctolagus cuniculus, is indirectly confirmed again.
