The editors have been ambitious in this undertaking, but in doing so have produced a work that encompasses great geo- graphical and methodological diversity. Based on papers delivered at a conference held at the Danish Institute in Damascus in late 2009, prior to the outbreak of conflict, this collection includes the contributions of scholars from eight countries and a range of disciplines, although seventeen of the eighteen chapters are written in English. The important and deserved study of cultural encounters within scholarly enquiry is emphasised within the introduction by way of a narration of the fascinating trou- bles that faced Kurt Villads Jensen, an editor and contributor, hours before the opening of the conference upon which this collection is based.
