Summary Adult migratory locusts Locusta migratoria (L.) older than ten days can be dated by evaluation of the wearing away of ventral thoracic hair. The index used varies from 0 to 6; 0 when there is no wearing away and 6 for complete abrasion. The validity of this method for both male and female adults has been proved under different circumstances. The wearing away of hair is three times faster in the hot rainy season in Madagascar than in the cool dry season. After simultaneous application to three different biotopes for ten months, the method provided new data concerning the life-span of adult acridials in the wild state, the relative participation of male and female in interstation migration, and the sedentation of adult populations. The advantages and limits of applying this dating method in the field are discussed.
