The main aim of the conference’s organisers, as A.D. Beiham- mer explains in his introductory article “Eastern Mediterranean Diplomatics: The Present State of Research” (pp. 1–24), is to present Byzantine, Latin and Arabic archives from the Eastern Mediterranean for the period 1000–1500, taking into account how their form and content impact on their usability for historians. However, as one can see from the title, in most contributions, aspects of linguistic communication between the representatives of the various peoples who lived or ruled in the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean also play an important role. Bei- hammer’s introduction gives a useful overview of the Greek and Latin documents. There are nineteen essays in total, divided into three parts. All cite relevant recent international bibliography.
