AT Tim AVSTaALXAN ASSOCIATION of Social Worker's conference in Melbourne last year, I was the leader of a group considering the Social Worker's con- tribution to the mental health of the normal child. During the discussion several members expressed the view that if they were required to undertake direct work with a child, they would feel very inadequate. The group claimed that the average social work student does not come in contact with children, and felt quite strongly that unless the worker was fortunate enough to have some personal experience with Children, she would be at a great disadvantage if called on to work directly in this field. It is true that few social workers, apart from those engaged in foster home care, juvenile probation or group work are actually working directly with the child, but in any agency there is always the possibility that on occasions some direct contact may be necessary. Also, with the recent development in therapeutic group techniques, the social worker is being asked more and more to assume responsibility for such groups in clinics and institutions.
