Dr Williams’s Trust and Library: a history

Dr Williams’s Trust and Library: a history BAPTIST QUARTERLY BOOK REVIEW Dr Williams’s Trust and Library: a history, by Alan Argent, Woodbridge, Boydell, 2022, pp xix + 335, £75.00, hardback, ISBN 9781783277025 Daniel Williams was a hugely influential Presbyterian divine and philanthropist. His will in the early eighteenth century benefitted causes including support for ministers in the emerging denominations of Old Dissent, schools for girls in Wales, educational endea- vour in Scotland and Harvard, as well as evangelistic efforts in the New World. His own bookshelves were the basis for the Library that bears his name. The book proceeds chronologically, drawing on the Trust minutes, printed material and personal reflections. Bringing the story almost to the present, Dr Argent’s marshalling of detail is impressive as he charts the progress of Trust and Library in its various London homes, and brings his own assessment of key people – treasurers, trustees, librarians and Secretaries – with their strengths, weaknesses and idiosyncrasies. Inadequate funding was a frequent anxiety. Largely served over the years by Unitarians, nevertheless the resources of the Trust and Library have been available to others of the Old Dissenting traditions, and the readers of the Library have enlarged beyond the original coterie of Dis- senting ministers http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Baptist Quarterly Taylor & Francis
