AbstractThe geography, field archaeology and relevant previous work are summarised. The discovery and partial recording so far of extensive early landscape evidence, exposed and made accessible by a forest fire in August, 2003, are described and discussed with particular reference to cairns, tracks and fields of prehistoric to medieval times. The recognition of a distinctive medieval field system is assessed in terms of its documentation and implications for dating similar remains on the Causse. A plea for appreciation of this new evidence is entered in view of the likelihood of land-use change as a result of the fire.
