Therefore, poverty reduction is considered the first objective of the Millennium Development Goals. It is believed that the development of entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can reduce the poverty in those economies. Moreover, the importance of entrepreneurship in building economic as well as social capacities in transition countries is undeniable. This Special Issue of Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies contributes to the current debate through selected papers from the first REDETE Conference held in Banja Luka in 2011. Scholars that took part in the event were mostly from South-East Europe, and the topic of this conference was closely related to the economic development and entrepreneurship in transition economies.
