Editor's introduction Asian Ethnicity, Volume 5, Number 2, June 2004 Editor’s Introduction COLIN MACKERRAS In this issue, we have a strong range of articles in terms of country, period of concern and topic. And articles continue to cast new light on ethnic issues in Asia. Southeast Asia is very well represented, with two articles on Singapore, two on Thailand and one on Vietnam. We also have one on South Asia (Bhutan) and one on East Asia (China). Most of the articles concern the present or very recent past, but there is one on the colonial period. Topics include ethnic identity, refugees, education and women. There is a trend in contemporary scholarship towards linking ethnic and women’s issues, because of a shared theme in suffering discrimination. While this is not the first issue to include articles that touch on women’s issues, it is the first to have one in which women’s ethnic identity issues are given full focus. It is also the first issue to include an article entirely about education, almost always a controversial topic but especially when it concerns a people like the Tibetans whose cultural relationship with the Chinese state remains extremely sensitive.
