First we must apologise to our readership for the slight delay in the production of this volume. This has been caused in part by one of us (da) being in hospital and in part by the departure of Richard p urslow as proprietor of Windgather press and publisher of this journal. Richard created Windgather p ress in 1999 when he left the university press world, and by setting up his own imprint he was able to follow his twin interests in publishing and in the history of the landscape, especially in Britain. His first decision was to opt for the s uper Quarto format for both his books and this journal, which he began with Richard Muir as its r fi st editor.s uper Quarto gave a distinctive sense of design which, linked with the ‘purslow eye’ for layout, image and quality of production quickly gave Windgather publications a strong reputation for looking good and being accessible. This was all enhanced by his insistence, with all his authors and editors, on writing which could be readily absorbed and be as free from jargon as possible so that a wider public could actually read them. e Th design, the brightness
