Editorial Behavioral Sleep Medicine, 11:1–4, 2013 Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1540-2002 print/1540-2010 online DOI: 10.1080/15402002.2013.741027 In 2000, then-American Academy of Sleep Medicine president Dan Buysse created the Behav- ioral Sleep Medicine Committee, of which I was privileged to be a member. The committee was charged with defining the domain, certifying practitioners, and accrediting training programs. Drawing on the clinical and research contributions of many people over many years, the Committee crystallized and elevated the subdiscipline of behavioral sleep medicine. As the many hours of meetings and calls played out over the next couple of years, it occurred to me that behavioral sleep medicine needed a journal. In virtually every scholarly domain, there is a reciprocal interplay between the field and a journal. Each profits from the other, and each is imperiled without the other. It became apparent to me that a flagship journal was essential to the blossoming of behavioral sleep medicine. I approached a half dozen publishers and got a positive response from Lawrence Erlbaum (both the name of a person and the name of a company). Erlbaum had a long history of being supportive of the social sciences, particularly cognitive psychology.
