Editorial ASIA PACIFIC JOURNAL OF SOCIAL WORK AND DEVELOPMENT Volume 18 • Number 2 • December 2008 The theme of this special issue is interventions in disasters. At the time of editing the manuscripts of articles included in the issue, I witnessed two massive, disturbing disasters on the television. The devastating and sad scenes of Cyclone Nargis that hit the country of Myanmar on May 3, 2008, and the associated controversy around the gate-keeping of international relief aid, showing of American warships in the Indian Ocean and the utter resistance of the junta government-despite the international pressure-was mind boggling for media watchers such as myself and appeared beyond anyone's prudence. I just wondered, what is the relationship between the disaster that affected suffering of lives and the American warships on the Indian Ocean? Is there any politics? Is it the vulnerability of individuals, families, communities, and nations that motivates forced interventionist aid on ethical grounds and achieves other purposes beyond relief and rehabilitation? Within a span of eight days, on May 12, 2008, our minds were shaken like the earth plates that jerked and shook the earth when a massive earthquake hit the Sichuan district in China.
