Th e devil was listening at the key-hole when the last editorial referred to social worker s as simple doers in personal problem situations. The Editor's Guest, in this issue, refers to a movement in Victoria in which social workers have really joined battle for more adequate hospital and medical insurance; another author continue s the discussion of the social worker as consultant in the development of local aid services, and a social worker and a lawyer discuss together the recommendation s for the setting up of a Family Court in New South Wales—a mov e in which they both have been active. I say that the devil was behind this manifestation of social work activity becaus e entering the arena of public decision-making has already been attended b y the flying return of some brick-bats; there are likely to be more. Giving advice, making recommendations and offering consultation from a particular knowledg e and value standpoint means willingness to confront those holding contrar y or even slightly different
