Ethnic Place and Artistic Creation: Dilemmas of Sephardic Artists in Israel Ethnic Place and Artistic Creation: Dilemmas of Sephardic Artists in Israel MARILYN RUESCHEMEYER his article focuses on the experiences of Jewish painters and sculptors of T Sephardi background in the Israeli art world.’ It argues that their role in Israeli art mirrors and is shaped by the place of Sephardi Jews in Israeli so- ciety. Looking at the complex interaction between Ahkenazim and Sephardim -between Jews of “Western” and European origins and Jews of “Eastern” or Oriental background-in Israeli society, the article seeks to il- luminate the far-reaching consequences of ethnicity for the artist and to ex- plore the links between the creation of art-one of the most personal crea- tive endeavors-and the society in which the production of art is embedded. I. THE CONTEXT At this point in Israeli history, it is the Soviet immigrants who absorb most of the attention in the public. Welcomed in part because they add a European presence to the increasing number of Arabs and Eastern Jews, they also represent a continuing legitimization of the Zionist dream of gath- ering all those in the diaspora, all Jews exiled from the land of Israel.
