Leaping across 1400 years of history in a single tome is a challenging business under any conditions, but this is particularly the case for so contested a topic. Naturally this task has been attempted before with mixed success by authors from many different schools of thought, some of whom have more visible agendas than others. Nevertheless, Europe and the Islamic World succeeds where many have failed. It provides a coherent and – for the most part – lucid account of relations between these societies, offering both a central nar- rative spine and some thought-provoking digressions into more thematic topics.
