Fascism's European Empire: Italian Occupation during the Second World War

Fascism's European Empire: Italian Occupation during the Second World War Book Reviews 469 curiosity into a French national drink by the end of the eighteenth century. The story that the author tells also helps our understanding of the key role played by the Armenian trade diaspora in the opening of the first cafe ´ s in France and in the transmission of techniques that supported French silk manufacture. Orientalism in Early Modern France is a wide-ranging study which offers a historically grounded analysis of early modern French discourse about Islam and the ‘Orient’. One of the book’s merits is to contrast the negative cultural representations of the Islamic world with the friendly relations between the French state and the Ottoman Empire, thus revealing the gap ‘between discourse and reality’ (p. 3). The author’s concern to investigate both the ‘orientalization of France and the resistance to it’ (p. 6) has led her to examine polemical anti-Islamic texts against the background of cooperation with the Ottomans and the desire for oriental commodities. Moreover, when she discusses travel accounts—which form the main sources of her study—the author is careful to identify the nuances and contra- dictions characterizing French views about the Ottomans inside the same text.
